Some Frequently Asked Questions about the QCommander

Why would I need a software upgrade?
New features and fixtures are often added and made available via software upgrades. New software can be obtained on a PCMCIA card from your dealer or can be loaded on to your own card by LightProcessor. Detail of software releases and added features are available on the QCommander Software page of this web site. It is recommended that you upgrade from any version prior to 1.07L whatever you situation. Subsequent versions may or may not have enhancements that are of relevance to your application and use.

What do you mean when you say 'upgrades must be VIA version 1.07L?'
Version 1.07 contained changes that effect the way new fixtures are updated. This later fixture system must be in use on your desk before upgrades after 1.07L can be installed. Please ensure when ordering an upgrade that you specify the existing software version you are running.

How do I tell what software version I have?
At the Main Menu, press ‘Store’ and the software version will be displayed.

Do I have to upgrade my fixture library when upgrading the operating software?
No. The choice to upgrade fixtures is made by the setting in the options menu.

Do I have to upgrade the operating system when upgrading the fixture library?
Not necessarily. It depends on the software version you are currently using and the fixtures you wish to add. Check with your LightProcessor representative.

When I upgrade my software, all my fixtures have been changed, why is this?
When the QCommander stores your fixtures choices, it refers to those fixtures using their position within the list of all those available. New software with additional fixtures listed, may place your chosen fixture at a different position. This does not affect any existing programs, and will only become apparent when you program any new scenes or chases, or try and use the ‘Live’ function in Run Mode. Simple remove your current fixture assignments and re-assign them from the new list.

How do I change the fade and hold times on a chase once I have programmed it?
To edit a chase, you must first go into Prog/Edit mode, then press ‘Chase’. Scroll up and down to get to the chase which you want to edit and press ‘Store’. The QCommander will automatically go to the first step in the chase. Press ‘Store’ again and then use the ‘Step +’ softkey to advance through the chase steps until you reach the last step - which will usually be the step which has ‘loop to start’ in the display. Press ‘Store’ again and then ‘Escape’ and you will get the screen which allows you to adjust the global fade and hold times for the chase. You will be able to make any changes and store the chase as normal.

How do overlay scenes work?
An overlay scene is a special kind of scene which only replays information for certain channels. Overlay scenes are programmed in exactly the same way as normal scenes. Attributes which need to be replayed are flagged with the word ‘Overlay’ by pressing the softkey while the attribute name is shown in the display. More than one attribute can be flagged in a single scene, and for convenience the QCommander will open the shutter and put the dimmer at full so that the programmer is able to see what is going on.

The Capture button doesn’t seem to do anything?
After software version 1.07W an option to disable the Capture feature was added. This can be switched on by pressing ‘Card’, ‘System’, ‘Options’, and then scrolling to option 28. The trackball can be used to turn Capture on.

My midi keyboard only switches the touch keys.
Some smaller midi keyboards are offset by a number of octaves. This can be overcome by changing the midi offset. To do this press ‘Card’, ‘System’, ‘Options’, and scroll to option 29. The midi offset can be set using the trackball, and the keyboard can be set to start switching at any key.

I have uploaded some programs from a memory card onto a new desk, but the passcodes have changed.
When you transfer programs from one desk to another, the passcodes remain with the desk. Uploading new programs into a desk will not affect the passcodes. Also, uploading new software leaves passcodes unchanged.

The dimmer channels on my intelligent lights only seem to switch even though the chase I have programmed tells them to fade.
This is probably due to the dimmer channel of the intelligent light being set to ‘Snap’ rather than ‘Fade’. When the QCommander assigns fixtures to DMX channels it makes certain decisions about how the channel should function. You can change the default settings via the ‘Set Up’, ‘ChnType’ Menu option. Scroll down to the appropriate channel and then use the ‘Type’ softkey to change the display to ‘Fade’. You should now find that the channel will fade in response to the times set in the chase.

How can I erase the whole memory of the desk?
Use ‘Card’, ‘System’, ‘Erase’, and the press ‘Store’ to confirm that you want to erase some of the memory. You can now use the softkeys to scroll through the erase options, for example, you can just erase the keys without affecting anything else. Erase Everything is an option, and you must press ‘Store’ to confirm the choice.
